In 1986 the historic Wide Ruins Trading Post was lost in a fire. The community has since been forced to shop elsewhere. Ganado is about 23 miles to the north. Chambers is about 19 miles to the south. Most shopping trips are made to Gallup, New Mexico – about 66 miles to the east. The community is in a spectacular scenic area. Antelope Lake is 14 miles to the northeast which offers good fishing and camping; “a down to earth enjoyment for family outing and vacations”.
The Wide Ruins Chapter conducts meetings monthly to keep residents informed; residents have a forum to express their opinions to their Navajo Nation Council Delegate or to decide on matters concerning their chapter.
